What a profile is
An AI profile is a voice: a model, a set of rules and a personality. It is what replies to you in a workspace, and one workspace can use several. A profile is not tied to one story: the same Line editor can work in every workspace you allow it in.
Profiles live in the Library, on the launch screen. New profile opens an empty one; Or start with offers three starters (Line editor, Brainstorm partner, Narrator) that fill in the identity and rules for you. The connection always stays your choice.
Identity
Section titled “Identity”| Field | What it does |
|---|---|
| Name | How the profile appears in pickers and in the chat. |
| Description | One line about what it is for. Shown in the Library. |
| Colour | Names this profile in the chat, so you always know who is speaking. Ten to choose from. |
Connection
Section titled “Connection”| Field | What it does |
|---|---|
| API profile | Which of your connections the requests go to. |
| Model | One of that connection’s models. |
Without both, the profile shows Needs a model and cannot reply. Exported profiles never carry the connection, so an imported profile always needs this step.
Generation
Section titled “Generation”| Field | Default | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Temperature | 0.7 | From 0 to 2. Lower is steadier and more literal; higher is looser and more surprising. |
| Max reply tokens | 2048 | The longest reply the model may write. This room is reserved in every request. |
| Custom JSON | off | Raw JSON properties added to the API request, for provider options Kallamo has no field for, like top_p or presence_penalty. The properties are added to the request after Kallamo’s own, so a property you set there wins. |
Behavior and rules
Section titled “Behavior and rules”The profile’s instructions: how it writes, what it must and must never do, and the format of its answer. This is the system prompt, sent first in every request.
- Type
{{to insert a variable. Its value is filled in every time the profile runs. - Preview shows the rules with every variable filled in, and marks a variable that does not exist.
Good rules are short and concrete. Say what to keep (“keep the author’s voice, names and facts exactly as written”), what to return (“return only the edited text”), and what never to do. The recipes have complete examples.
Smart search
Section titled “Smart search”Search before replying lets the AI write its own searches through Memory, Worldbuild and the profile’s knowledge base before it answers, instead of matching your message word for word. It has Search rounds (1 to 5, default 3) and optional Search instructions. See Smart search.
Knowledge base
Section titled “Knowledge base”Each profile can carry its own knowledge: files and hand-written memories it takes to every workspace. Open it from the Library with Open knowledge base. See Profile knowledge base.
Where profiles reply
Section titled “Where profiles reply”- In the chat: pick the profile in the message box. In roleplay, the narrator is the profile you pick.
- In the Writing Desk: select a passage, press Invoke AI and pick the profile. The mode you choose there (Replace, Insert after, Analyze) decides where the answer goes. See Suggestions and diffs.
- In a workflow: as one of its steps. See Workflows.
A workspace only offers the profiles it allows, in Configuration › Profiles & Workflows.
What a profile reads on each reply
Section titled “What a profile reads on each reply”- Its Behavior and rules, with variables filled in.
- Its always-on knowledge, and the workspace’s always-on memory.
- What retrieval found: workspace memory, Worldbuild, its own searchable knowledge, older chat. See How Kallamo finds context.
- In roleplay, the scene and what the focal character can know. See Perspective and Knowledge.
- As much recent conversation as fits.
- Your message and any attached files.
Profiles that come with Kallamo
Section titled “Profiles that come with Kallamo”| Profile | Where | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Narrator | Evenwell | Runs the Evenwell roleplay. |
| Editing | The Lighthouse | Line-editing in the Writing Desk. Never touches a line that already works, alters established facts, or resolves ambiguity left on purpose. |
| Brainstorming | The Lighthouse | A thinking partner for the chat, built on what is already true of the story. |
| Review & Coherence | The Lighthouse | Checks text against the canon and flags contradictions: chronology, traits, knowledge, whereabouts. |
Duplicate, export, delete
Section titled “Duplicate, export, delete”From the Library you can duplicate a profile to try a variation, export it as a .klp file, or delete it. Deleting a profile removes it from every workspace that uses it, and workflows lose the steps it runs.
