Workspace memory
The Memory tab holds what the AI knows in a workspace beyond the conversation itself: your notes, your files and the history of the chat. It comes in three kinds, and each reaches the AI differently.
| Kind | How it reaches the AI | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| Always on | Sent with every prompt, so the AI never misses it. | Short rules and the facts every scene needs. |
| Searchable | Split into chunks and looked up when a prompt is about them. Only the matching pieces are sent. | Lore, reference, anything you would otherwise paste in. |
| History | Older chat, archived and summarised, searched when the story reaches back. | Nothing to manage: summaries appear on their own. |
Always-on memory takes room in every request; the total shows how much of the context window it uses. A long file costs little as searchable.
Adding to memory
Section titled “Adding to memory”- Write a note: you choose always on or searchable.
- Upload a file: PDF, DOCX, TXT or MD, either way.
- Import KB package: notes and files from another export.
Each item’s controls
Section titled “Each item’s controls”- Profiles limits an item to some of the AI profiles in the workspace. A spoiler-heavy file can stay hidden from the brainstorming partner and open to the narrator.
- The switch turns it off without deleting it.
- ⋯ edits it, moves it between Always on and Searchable, or deletes it.
Tags and testing
Section titled “Tags and testing”World Index tags searchable chunks with the characters, factions and items they mention, so the AI recalls them by name. It reads text that is already searchable and never changes it. See World Index and the Tagger.
To see what a prompt would pull in, type it in the retrieval test and press Run test. It lists the memories found and how closely each one matches. Nothing found? Try the names or places you expect it to find.
Memory, Worldbuild or the profile?
Section titled “Memory, Worldbuild or the profile?”| Put it in | When it is |
|---|---|
| Worldbuild | A person, place, faction, item or rule of the world. The AI looks it up by name, and roleplay filters it by who knows it. |
| Workspace memory | Reference for this story that is not an entity: a plot outline, research, a style note for this book. |
| Profile knowledge base | What a profile needs in every story: a rulebook, a style guide. See Profile knowledge base. |
