Narrative State
The Narrative State is Kallamo’s own engine for roleplay. After every reply it reads the turn and writes the story down: the scene, the clock, belongings and relationships, and what each character now knows, believes and remembers. The next reply is built from that record.
What happens after a reply
Section titled “What happens after a reply”- The reply is written. You can read it at once; the state catches up behind it.
- Triage. A short pass decides which parts of the story the turn changed.
- Analysis. Those parts are read in depth, and every change declares its kind.
- Records. Scene, time, belongings, relationships and knowledge are updated. Big changes become proposals.
- The next reply is built from what the focal character can know.
This work runs on the Narrative State AI role, set in Settings › AI roles (how).
What it keeps
Section titled “What it keeps”- Scene: location, who takes part, who is nearby, objects present and the situation. A scene change applies whole or not at all.
- Story time: the clock moves by what the turn did. See Story time and the calendar.
- Belongings: items with quantity, condition and notes, and resources reported as amounts with a reason.
- Relationships: a value, a title and a description from each side.
- Knowledge: what each character perceived, was told, believes and remembers. See Perspective and Knowledge.
- New arrivals: a character with an established name joins Worldbuild. Anonymous people, places and items are proposed first.
Only what lasts is kept. Where someone stands right now stays in the scene, not in the records.
How much the AI may change
Section titled “How much the AI may change”Open Configuration › Roleplay › Narrative State in the workspace to choose a policy:
- Manual: the AI never changes the record. Only you do.
- Review everything: every AI change waits for your approval.
- Automatic: clear changes apply right away. Unclear ones wait for you.
Whatever you choose, a secret coming out or a new anonymous arrival waits for you as a proposal.
Review, retries and tidying
Section titled “Review, retries and tidying”- Review lists the changes waiting for you. Approve or reject each one.
- Activity shows recent changes, and updates that were interrupted or failed, ready to run again.
- Tidy previews repeated statements and momentary detail, then retires them. Retired records stay in the history.
Undo by regenerating
Section titled “Undo by regenerating”Regenerating or switching a reply first undoes the state of the reply it replaces. A switched or regenerated reply is read once, when you continue; Update now reads it sooner.
