Data, backups and privacy
What stays on your computer
Section titled “What stays on your computer”Everything you write and everything Kallamo records:
- workspaces, chats, chapters and worlds;
- every Narrative State record and memory;
- search indexes and embeddings, built on your computer by default;
- your API keys, encrypted at rest.
Kallamo has no account and no server of its own.
What leaves it
Section titled “What leaves it”One thing: the request you send to the model you chose, to the provider of that connection, with your key. It contains what that reply needs: the profile’s rules, the context retrieval found, the recent conversation and your message. With a local server, even that stays on your computer.
Two optional exceptions, both your choice:
- Embeddings through a connection (Settings › Embeddings) send text to that provider to be indexed. The default runs locally.
- Updates: the app checks GitHub for new releases.
Backups
Section titled “Backups”In Settings › Data and backups:
| Option | What it does |
|---|---|
| Back up | Workspaces, settings and downloaded models, in one file. Keep it somewhere else. |
| Restore | Replaces everything with a backup. Kallamo restarts when it finishes. |
| Safety copies | Copies Kallamo makes on its own before an update changes the database. |
| Data folder | Opens the folder with the databases, documents and images. |
| Search indexes | Delete them to free space. Every file must be indexed again before search works. |
Sharing is explicit
Section titled “Sharing is explicit”Nothing is shared unless you export it. Profiles, workflows, knowledge bases and worlds export as files you choose to hand over. Exported profiles never carry your keys. See Share profiles and workflows and Export and import a world.
