A profile cannot reply
Section titled “A profile cannot reply”“Needs a model” in the Library, or a message that the profile is not set up: the profile has no connection or no model. Select it in the Library, press Set up, pick a connection and a model, and Save profile. If the connection has no key, add it in Settings › Connections.
“Select an active AI Profile or Workflow”: pick one in the message box. If the list is empty, allow profiles in Configuration › Profiles & Workflows.
A local model does not answer
Section titled “A local model does not answer”- The base URL must end in
/v1:http://127.0.0.1:1234/v1for LM Studio. - The model must be loaded in the server, and its ID added to the connection exactly as the server lists it.
- Slow replies that time out: turn on Stream replies in Settings › Generation.
- Small local models follow long instructions less reliably. Shorten the profile’s rules, or use a larger model for the Narrative State role.
“The request does not fit”
Section titled ““The request does not fit””The request was larger than the limit and was stopped before reaching the provider. The error says how much came from instructions, retrieved context and history.
- Move long always-on files to searchable.
- Lower Max reply tokens on the profile.
- Archive older messages: Summarize now in Configuration › Context & memory.
- Check Max API payload in the workspace and the model’s context window in the connection.

The AI ignores something it should know
Section titled “The AI ignores something it should know”- Turn on Retrieval and context in Settings › Diagnostics and look at the reply’s context.
- Not found? Use the retrieval test in Memory with the words you expect. Lower Strictness a band, or add the name to the entity’s other names.
- Found but left out? The budget was full. Trim always-on knowledge or raise the payload.
- Spread across the story? Turn on smart search for that profile.
- A chapter? Check that it is in AI memory and not out of date.
A character knows something they should not
Section titled “A character knows something they should not”In roleplay, a character only gets what reached them. Check their Knowledge tab and the Knowledge of their factions and of the places they are local to: a fact written there is known to them. Facts written in always-on memory reach every scene; move secrets to Worldbuild Knowledge instead. See Perspective and Knowledge.
The Narrative State is not updating
Section titled “The Narrative State is not updating”- Check that the Narrative State role has a model in Settings › AI roles.
- Look under Activity in Configuration › Roleplay: interrupted or failed updates are listed there and can run again.
- After switching or regenerating a reply, the new one is read when you continue; Update now reads it sooner.
Windows warns about the installer
Section titled “Windows warns about the installer”The Windows build is not signed yet, so SmartScreen may show “Windows protected your PC”. Choose More info, then Run anyway.
macOS refuses to open Kallamo
Section titled “macOS refuses to open Kallamo”The macOS build is not signed yet. Right-click the app and choose Open, or allow it in System Settings › Privacy & Security. See Install Kallamo.
